Daily Route I, II & III (2024) were created as part of my Artist Residency in Motherhood (ARIM). They are interpretations of the architectural features of two buildings and one bridge that I see en route to my studio after the daily school run.

Newborn Parents Quilt (2024)

Commissioned by Helix Arts, as part of Creative Central Newcastle’s knowledge and skills pilot projects. I set up a group called Newborn Parents and together with writer Amanda Quinn created a space to hold birthing parents with their new babies. Through writing exercises over the course of 6 weeks, we explored this important transitional time. I made this quilt, which was made with my worn linen duvet cover after years of use with my own children. Dyed with tea to reflect the need for caffeine and comfort in those early days, I embroidered their words into the work. It was on public display in the window at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House, Newcastle for three months (March-July 2024). The project was funded by The North of Tyne Combined Authority and Newcastle City Council.

9 hours x 14 minutes x 17g (19x57cm) (2024)

This piece was made in response to the Baltic's open call. Produced during my ARIM, it demonstrates the parameters of motherhood and sustainability. I had 9 hours of child-free time per week, each row took an average 14 minutes and I had 17g left of the charity-shop found red yard left. The piece submitted, in total 78 rows of my abstract line work, seeks to create a rhythm that the viewer can connect with. All materials and tools were either found or passed on to me.

30 Lego Pieces 1-9 (2023)

Lego configurations and rotations made as part of my ARIM.

Take The Time (2023)

This 12-painting piece encourages viewers to take the time to work out if they are all the same drawing and/or if any of the twelve have the exact same colour configuration. This exercise creates movement within us: in our mind, eyes and our bodies. The switching of colours within the static shapes can make our brains feel like computers: scanning the images and forcing us to process each one to detect similarities. A fleeting glance can demand the viewer to stop, wait and engage: what can be discovered if we look and see what is in front of us?

Tickets To Freedom (1-9) (2023)

Made in response to my experience of Helix Arts' Artist Agency program that I was fortunate to get on in summer 2023. Travelling to Newcastle on the metro, on my own, was the first bit of space I had away from my children and work in over four years. Time to focus on my art and to think. The tangible tickets in my hands felt so powerful. Produced as part of my ARIM.
